Success in Mathematics for Beginning Engineering

Engineers require a sound knowledge of mathematics. It has been our experience that some students enrolling in our first year courses have difficulties. This could be due to bad experiences at school, not enough exposure to mathematics or the exposure was a number of years ago.

The readiness test is a self-test which will help you decide the level of support you may need in these areas. It should take about half an hour to complete. We urge you to take this test as soon as possible to maximise the support programs we have put in place.

1. Do the test
• print it
• then work through all the questions
2. Mark the test by comparing your answers with the model solutions
• if your answer is correct, click "Yes"
(this will automatically move to the next question)
• if your answer is incorrect, click "No"
then check your solution with one of those provided
by ticking which parts you have correct then clicking the submit button
(this will automatically move to the next question)
3. When you have marked your test, a study plan will be recommended
4. Work through the sections of the refreshment material which are recommended in your study plan

The materials also provide a review of mathematical skills with examples and activities. Once you have taken the readiness test and then worked through the recommended material, there are some follow-up tests for you to check how your knowledge has improved.
